Every Spring we spring forward an hour. We gain more daylight during our normal day but lose one hour of sleep in the process.
But is your house ready for that big spring forward? Spring is the perfect time to do your home maintenance and get your house ready for the year.
Here are some tips to make sure that your home is ready this spring.
Now is the perfect time to test all your smoke detectors (and carbon monoxide alarms if you have them).
Make sure to replace the batteries so you don’t have the annoying low battery beep in the middle of the night. Now’s a good time to check your fire extinguishers and see if they need to be replaced.
Check your exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom by putting a tissue in front of them. If the tissue stays put, it’s fine. If not, call in an expert to repair them so you don’t develop a mold problem.
Go through the inside and outside of the home and caulk any areas that need it, including weather-stripping and tile.
Spring is also a good time to do a walk around the house and inspect everything from the roof to the masonry to the gutters. If any of these need attention, either do it yourself or hire a professional to fix it for you. Also, be sure to look for signs of mold as you do this walk-through
Finally, you know that spring signals one other thing for homeowners—the beginning of air conditioning bills. Have a technician look over your HVAC system to make sure you’re not needlessly wasting power (and money) this spring and summer.
Spring has become synonymous with cleaning, but before you head into the garage to dig everything out from under junk, be sure to take time to do the needed maintenance for your home. Your house will thank you for it!
